The History of Annette Winn

Our Community

Annette Winn Elementary School is located in the northeast corner of Douglas County in Lithia Springs. Located near several mineral springs, Lithia Springs is a historical community and was the site of a thriving resort. Around the turn of the century the resort burned, and Lithia Springs changed from a resort to a more residential community. With the growth of Atlanta, Lithia Springs became a suburb chosen by new residents because of its proximity to Interstate 20, Fulton Industrial Boulevard and Hartsfield International Airport.

The residents of Lithia Springs are a diverse population. On one hand, part of the community is second and third generation residents; therefore, some students have the advantage of having extended family members close by who play an active role in their lives. On the other hand, other residents typically stay in the area anywhere from several weeks to a few years. Annette Winn's district includes three mobile home communities, six apartment complexes, two short-term rental facilities as well as single family housing and duplex rentals.

Our School

Annette Winn Elementary School began as a one room school house. Originally called Lithia Springs School, the present facility was established in 1939. Mrs. Annette Winn was the school's first principal. Because of the dedication and hard work of Mrs. Winn, the school was renamed in her honor. Prior to remodeling in 1987, Annette Winn housed kindergarten through second grade students. The renovations to the school allowed for the addition of grades three through five. Storage areas for each grade level, a conference room, a media center, a gym with a stage, a music room and an art room were also added.  At the present time, our school consists of twenty-one traditional classrooms housing Kindergarten through fifth grade. Additional services provided in our school include special education, gifted education (Program Challenge), remedial education, Title I, Early Intervention Prevention (EIP), ESOL and the speech and language program. Our school participates in the Partners in Education Program which is a system effort to link schools and businesses in an educational partnership.
